Why Roswell Park for Hepatobiliary Cancer

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center performs more than 100 surgeries for patients with liver and pancreatic cancers every year, making it a high-volume center specializing in these rare diseases.

“For these patients, it is important to come to Roswell Park and meet with a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including medical, radiation and interventional oncologists, surgeons and interventional gastroenterologists as early as possible in order to fully consider all treatment options available to them,” says Mashaal Dhir, MD, FACS, a surgical oncologist and Section Chief of Upper GI, HBT and Endocrine Surgery.

Roswell Park is the only hospital in the region to offer robotic hepatic artery infusion pump treatment, which has been shown to double the survival rates and prolong the lives of patients with bile duct cancers that cannot be removed or patients with colorectal cancer metastases that cannot be resected or pose a high risk of recurrence.

Additionally, Roswell Park offers robotic Whipple surgeries, something very few centers offer, for both cancerous and benign conditions. “With this procedure, patients are able to return to their regular life faster and to return to chemotherapy faster,” Dr. Dhir says.

“When a patient comes to Roswell Park, they are surrounded by experts in the field who are not only following the guidelines and standards of care, they are involved in the panels that shape those guidelines,” Dr. Dhir says. “Our experts are trying to come up with treatment that will be the standard of care tomorrow.”
