The Roswell Park Care Network promises to bring the same level of care to its affiliate locations as patients receive at the main hospital in downtown Buffalo. It also creates the opportunity for doctors to collaborate on patient care and work together, in the same facility, to provide treatment not available at affiliate locations.
David Wormuth, MD, MPH, FACS, is a thoracic surgeon at St. Joseph’s Health, a Roswell Park Care Network Affiliate in Syracuse, NY. He had a lung cancer patient, diagnosed at stage 3A, who had a lesion in the left upper lobe and responded well to treatment, but needed surgery to restore his lung function.
Elisabeth Dexter, MD, FACS, a thoracic surgeon at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, suggested they work together to provide the needed surgery in the Buffalo hospital. The patient immediately agreed and the two surgeons worked together on the relatively rare operation, yielding a positive result.
