Chair, Department of Supportive Care
I am currently the Lee Foundation Endowed Chair of the Department of Palliative and Supportive Care and serve as the Palliative Care Program Chief at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. I have been in this role since January of 2016, and I previously served as the Director of Palliative Medicine at the VA Western New York Healthcare System from 2005-20016. In 2005, I started and served as the program director for the University at Buffalo (UB) Palliative Medicine Fellowship until 2017. This fellowship program graduates four palliative medicine fellows annually. I am an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at UB.
I completed a residency in internal medicine at the University at Buffalo in 2004 and went on to complete a fellowship in Palliative and Pain Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York (2004-2005). I was initially board certified in Internal Medicine, Pain Medicine and have maintained my Hospice and Palliative Medicine board certification. I have several published articles, including peer-reviewed clinical research, book chapters and review articles. My scholarly focus is on the palliation of inoperable malignant bowel obstruction, chemical coping, buprenorphine use for cancer pain, medical cannabis and palliative medicine education. I have given many lectures, presentations and grand rounds locally and have been invited nationally to speak on palliative and pain topics. I teach medical students, residents, and fellows daily. I recently served a three-year term as chair for the education special interest group and currently serve as the chair for the fellowship director’s special interest group for the national organization, the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). I also serve as the editor for a quarterly educational exchange series brief report in the top read journal in palliative medicine, The Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, and have served as an ad hoc reviewer for this journal in the past.
